Dragon’s Lair

This is a blast from the past I did back in 2013 when modeling paste had yet to become cool 😀  I stamped this  Dragon Rubber Stamp”in to Liquitex light modeling paste. There are a few ways to do this but for me lightly misting the rubber stamp with water prior to stamping gives me the best results and making sure my paste layer is on the thin side. I do make sure that my paste has set up a “skin” before stamping in to it. Again if you try this at home use a rubber stamp your not fond of and practice the technique. There are many new modeling pastes since I made this and I am quite fond of Paper Artsy Grunge paste as well as Deco Arts. It took me a few tries before I could guestimate how long to let the stamp sit in the paste. Always clean your stamp immediately after you pull it of the paste as it is not the friend of rubber stamps.

I then used a spatula to spread additional paste around the image and let it set up. I then stenciled atop the hard layer with Crafter’s Workshop Cell Theory which to me resembled reptile / dino skin. My plan was coming together because I wanted him to look like he was in a cave and that the cave was studded with these scales. Those stars you see were embedded while the paste was wet. I also started to initially color him up with acrylics.

I next did the scary step where you use fluid acrylic paint in this case Golden’s raw umber all over the piece and then after counting any where from 5 to 10 seconds wiped the paint back with a baby wipe esp. the dragon. I wanted that color to embed in to the image but not total out the painting I had done. But you can see where the brown goes deep in to the image you get a cool dimensional effect.

I then tidied up the colors in the dragon and dry brushed gold in to the maroon areas so the veins in the wings etc would pop. Here I dry brushed some Lumiere paint in a green tone over the scales to give them some dimension and Ta Daaa all done! I should say this was done on a piece of gessoed heavy weight chipboard.

  1. Another cool idea for me to try.

Love everything about this. I didn’t know you could stamp in the paste.

Thank you for sharing all your great talent and ideas to try.

    Hugs

  2. Love this!!!! Dragons are one of my favorites and this is wonderful. The scales are amazing – they look so real. He really does look like he’s in a cave. Going to have to try some art with texture paste after seeing this. Inspiring!
